[a simple ajax.php file] /ajax.php Jim O'Brien (hockey) James Joseph O'Brien (born September 3, 1962) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player who played the majority of his career in the National Hockey League (NHL). In the United States Hockey League (USHL), he was a league scoring champion in 1983–84 with the Des Moines Buccaneers and was named a league all-star in 1983–84. O'Brien made his NHL debut in 1986 with the New York Rangers. He played his final NHL season with the Dallas Stars in 1994. He is a member of the Boston Bruins Ring of Honor. Playing career O'Brien began his junior career with the Waterloo Black Hawks. In 1982–83, he scored 61 goals and 71 assists, good enough to win the USHL scoring championship. He was selected in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers and was the Rangers' first-round pick, eighth overall. O'Brien made his National Hockey League debut on October 13, 1986 with the Rangers. He scored his first NHL goal on October 24 against Jacques Lemaire of the Minnesota North Stars. O'Brien was one of several NHL players who left the USHL to join the fledgling International Hockey League (IHL) in 1986. The IHL had a reputation for producing players who had not yet been selected in the NHL Entry Draft. O'Brien's IHL tenure was brief. He played in 31 games with the San Diego Gulls in 1986–87. The following season, he played 22 games with the Fort Worth Fire. He scored seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points and recorded 112 penalty minutes in the 1988–89 season. O'Brien was then traded to the New Haven Nighthawks on March 6, 1989. He played the next season with the Nighthawks, earning 27 points in 59 games. O'Brien spent the next three seasons in the IHL. With the Salt Lake Golden Eagles in 1990–91, he recorded 60 points in just 63 games. O'Brien became a full-time member of the New York Rangers in the 1991–92 season.
